The Good Samaritan

The first thing that comes to my mind when I hear the
words “My Neighbor” is the parable of the Good
Samaritan. What a story! It is exactly what the world
needs today. It’s about an unfortunate man who was
brutally attacked by criminals as he travelled alone on
the road. Two clergymen passed him by, and did not offer
to help, when at last a most unlikely man became his
life-saver. Although a Samaritan was a natural enemy to
a Jew, he did not hesitate to clean the beaten-up man’s
wounds, carry him to a hotel, pay for his stay and
promise to come back to ensure his well being.
This painting is inspired by a moment of great danger.
Angry clouds announce an impending storm, while two
birds of prey are looking for a dinner made of human
flesh. There is nowhere to go in this arid desert, with
one bare tree and rough ground with actual rusty nails
and foot-bruising sharp stones. My neighbour is the one
close-at-heart not close-at-hand. In times of trouble it
is the compassion not physical proximity that counts.
