In the context of living in Assala village I am a Western female living mostly among Middle Eastern males, so have interpreted the theme ‘My Neighbour’ as the Other, using the Taoist symbols of Yin and Yang to convey the balance of opposites. In this famous symbol white represents male, black represents female and at the centre of black there is a core of white, as within white exists black. Female represents the Orient, male the Occident so as the opposites continue to crossover it becomes confusing which side we are on. I have used beach ball bats to symbolize that relationship is a game which is much more fun if you keep the ball in the air and nobody wins. The female component offers a flower from her centre which attracts the ‘male gaze’ or is it the West voyeuristically viewing the East as a commodity

The protester is an Egyptian woman ululating inspired by Munch’s ‘The Scream.’ The perpetrator is the ‘system’ symbolized by a generic cartoon villain such as Cruella de Ville who killed puppies to steal the fur off their back.
