Artist's Statement

I enjoy manipulating shapes, patterns, space, and especially colors in the visual expression of subjects that intrigue me. Frequently, I choose to break up the picture’s plane. This technique emphasizes the abstract qualities of the design rather than focusing on a literal interpretation of the subject.

My Neighbor
1950 LE (US$ 355)

My interpretation of the Caravan theme My Neighbor: East and West is inspired by a quote from Khalil Gibran.

“Your neighbor is your other self, dwelling behind a wall. In understanding, all walls shall fall down. Who knows but that your neighbor is your better self, wearing another body? See that you love him as you would love yourself.”
-- Khalil Gibran, from his book Jesus, Son of Man

The compositional vertical divisions represent the walls of separateness that we must eliminate to know our neighbors. The abstract figures convey three different stages: remaining apart and isolated, moving past confining walls, and finally coming together to meet each other. The circle symbolizes the inclusion of all mankind as neighbors.
