Artist's Statement
“The donkey, folklore and Easter”
When I first saw the donkey, I realized that I would not
be doing a fine art piece to be put in luxurious
exhibitions halls; instead I was taken into the realm of
a folklore atmosphere. For this reason I used the
donkey's body as a tool to express this atmosphere; I
felt as if I was in the "Virgin Mary's" folklore
festival, and the Holy Week celebrations. This is why I
chose to draw Christian symbols on the donkey's body,
such as "the pomegranate" which symbolizes the church's
congregation, "the palms" which symbolize the palm
branches and Palm Sunday celebrations, and "the palm
trees and dates" which symbolize the Coptic church
martyrs.
My approach to this work was as if I was a folklorian
artist sitting on the ground drawing and waiting for
people to pass by and purchase this simple form of art.
