Curator
Roland Prime
Roland Prime is the curator of the visual art
exhibition of the Caravan Festival of the Arts.
Roland achieved a degree in Fine Arts at Canterbury
Christ Church College, England. Describing his art, he
says, “I had always wanted to paint and explore the
variety of expression that can achieved through
painting.” Previously he had worked as a sculptor
concentrating his skills on welded steel structures.
Since arriving in Egypt Roland has focused on painting.
Opportunity arose after a short while to create a 5m
tall sculpture with the remains of the dismantled organ,
from the historic St John’s Church/Maadi. This now
stands permanently at the entrance to the church.
More recently his work has
been looking at the beauty of the landscape both urban
and country…the division between land and sky and the
effects of light where the two meet.
Having now been in Cairo
for over seven years, Roland continues a successful
dialogue with the Egyptian art scene and recently
attended the 2nd Luxor International Painting Symposium
sponsored by the Ministry of Culture in Egypt. He
continues to explore the medium of paint; exhibiting
work on a regular basis, each exhibition pushes the
boundaries of expression through the medium of paint.
As the curator for the
Caravan exhibitions he has endeavoured to bring to
the audience, an ever greater range of professional
artists. An important aspect of the Caravan
exhibitions is the annual theme which all artists are
required to work from, this year’s theme being “My
Neighbour”. It is also the only exhibition to be
held within the confines of a church in Egypt
guaranteeing a unique and exciting exhibition of 45
artists’ work.
