Roland
graduated from Canterbury Christ Church College
with a B.A. in Fine Arts where he studied
painting and drawing; through the exploration of
art his work became gradually more three
dimensional. Once qualified in welding this
developed into creating large sculptures in
steel made from the discarded pieces of metal
from the steel industry, a recycled art form,
gaining public and private commissions in the
process.
He then moved to Cairo Egypt eight years ago and
has since concentrated his efforts on painting.
Achieving considerable success, he was invited
to take part in the 2nd Luxor International
Painting Symposium sponsored by Egypt’s Ministry
of Culture. His work is now part of the Egyptian
Ministry of Culture Collection that has been
exhibited in Cairo and Luxor. He regularly
exhibits in downtown Cairo and leads adult
education courses in painting and drawing.
Whilst here in Cairo, he was commissioned to
create a 5m tall sculpture for St. John’s
Church-Maadi. The sculpture entitled “Resurrection”
continues the theme of recycling by using the
old pipes from the organ which had fallen into
disrepair.
As curator for the visual art exhibition of the
Caravan Festival of the Arts he has
focused on a variety of artists from East and
West that can reflect the inner emotions of our
current time. The exhibition is now in its
fourth year, and is gaining considerable
publicity throughout the Middle East and various
parts of the world.
