Lotus & Papyrus 1

Both pieces are based on the ancient symbols of Upper and Lower Egypt – the lotus and the papyrus, often used together in ancient times to symbolize harmony between the regions. The papyrus was used as a symbol of fertility and life during the Old Kingdom, often used in ceremonies. The lotus flower dominates in these works. It is a commonly used symbol representing purity and beauty in the far East, and in Buddhism it is often used as a throne for the seated Buddha. The Chinese influence is again present in both works with the use of temple paper, there being five squares in both works. This is considered an extremely auspicious and lucky number.
